OpenClaw Issues Version 2026.10.1

Skill discovery, MCP Apps beside the chat, and full backups to Cloudflare R2

The OpenClaw project has put out version 2026.10.1 of its agent platform. Chief among the novelties: discovery of installed skills, MCP Apps that now sit beside the chat window, and full backups to external storage or to Cloudflare R2.

Mac owners are promised a simpler setup, and the maintainers report a great many bug fixes besides. The release gathers 2,425 pull requests from 402 contributors, a sizeable crowd for a single edition.

Opinion & Essay

Karpathy: The Gap in Understanding Has Become a Funnel

Billions have barely met an LLM; a few thousand see the frontier from inside

Andrej Karpathy argues that public understanding of LLMs is now a steep funnel: some 6 billion people have barely touched them, 1–2 billion use free chatbots, about 20 million professionals in math and code watch agents finish months of work from a prompt, and perhaps 5,000 insiders work with frontier systems. He credits the spread to problem ambition, uneven capability and access.

“The vertigo of the curve going vertical.”

Hermes Agent Gets Eyes on Your Browser

A community-built, open-source side panel feeds the page at hand to Nous Research’s agent

Nous Research declared “Hermes Agent is yours,” and an aggregator spotlighted a browser side panel that reads the page you are on (text, headings, forms and links) and hands it to your Hermes Agent as context. The panel is a community project by Jon Komet, not an official Nous release; it connects to a local, cloud or self-hosted Hermes and is free, open source and MIT-licensed.

OpenHands’ “Agent Canvas” in the Spotlight

One self-hosted control room for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini and more

An aggregator gave a Sunday spotlight to Agent Canvas from OpenHands, a self-hosted control centre for every coding agent one runs: OpenHands, Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, Pi and OpenCode, across local, remote and cloud backends. Automations such as PR triage and nightly security passes come built in. It is open source; note that it is not new, as its release notes date back to at least September.

“Anatomy” Joins Hermes Agent’s Skill Shelf

An open-source skill that explains ideas by building working machines

Anatomy, a skill by @wheresryan22 that turns a one-line idea into an interactive isometric machine (SVG, optional WebGL effects, a beta 3D mode), is now an officially integrated optional skill in Nous Research’s Hermes Agent, Teknium announced in a post Nous reposted. It also runs in Claude Code, OpenCode and Codex, and is MIT-licensed.

Letters & Remarks

“We Shouldn’t Settle for an Opaque Superintelligence”

Thariq sides with Terence Tao on understanding over mere results

Responding to a post about a slide from Terence Tao’s “Math 2.0” lecture at Caltech, which argued that a Stage 4 cancer patient would not care whether humans understood how a working cure works, Thariq (@trq212) wrote that Tao is “directionally correct.” A key signal of intelligence, he said, is communication: products and models should build understanding with humans instead of disintermediating them.
